7 Questions to Ask When Booking a Coastal Wedding Venue
If you’re dreaming of saying I do by the sea, you’re not alone. There’s something undeniably romantic about a coastal wedding with the sound of waves, the light on the water, and that feeling that the world slows down for a moment.
I love meeting new couples to help them decide if a coastal wedding is right for them. But before you fall completely in love with your dream venue (and trust me, it’s easy to do), there are a few questions worth asking to make sure it’s the right fit. Here’s what I always recommend couples ask when they start their seaside search.
How close is the venue to the beach itself?
Some venues say “coastal,” but that can mean anything from ocean views to being a 20-minute drive from the shore. Ask how close your ceremony space is to the beach, and if it’s accessible for your guests (especially those who may need a little extra time or support).
At Arches, our ceremonies take place just steps from Newberry Beach. You can literally hear the waves during your vows.

What happens if the weather changes?
The sea can be beautifully unpredictable. It’s worth knowing what your plan B looks like. So find out whether it’s a covered space, a charming indoor area, or if there’s just a flexible team ready to adapt.
A good venue won’t just hope for good weather; they’ll have an elegant solution if the skies turn moody.

Are there restrictions on timings, music, or decor?
Coastal locations often come with conservation or noise restrictions, so it’s always best to check early on. Ask about your options for live music, outdoor lighting, or candles. The best venues will guide you through what’s possible so you can still bring your vision to life without any last-minute surprises.

Can we make a weekend of it?
If you’re travelling to the coast, you may want to turn your wedding into a full weekend celebration, complete with a welcome dinner, a beach walk, a brunch the next morning. Ask your venue if they can accommodate that, or recommend local stays for your guests.
At Arches, many couples pair their day with a stay at A Beach Bedroom, which are two beautiful cottages tucked just along the coast… all within 5 minutes walking distance. And if you’re looking for welcome dinners and brunches like we recommended above, we’d be happy to offer you our favourite recommendations of where you could go to get them.

What’s included in the hire fee?
Every venue packages things differently. Some include furniture, staff, and sound systems, while others offer a completely blank canvas. Neither is right or wrong, it just depends on what feels easiest for you.
Getting a clear breakdown upfront helps you understand what’s handled for you and what you’ll need to arrange yourself. At Arches, we provide comfortable seating for 100 guests and a table for use while signing the register.

How does the tide affect our day?
This one’s a little coastal secret, but tides can change everything from photo opportunities to ceremony timings. Ask your venue when the tide will be at its best for beach photos, and whether it impacts access to certain areas.
At Arches, we always help couples plan their timeline around the tide, so the beach looks its most beautiful when you’re ready to step out for portraits. You can plan ahead with the tide times tracked here.

Can we visit at the same time of year we’re planning to marry?
The coast feels different with every season. Visiting around the same time of year gives you a true sense of the light, weather, and atmosphere, all the details that shape your day.
A summer sunset feels golden and endless; in spring, the cliffs bloom with colour. Seeing it for yourself makes all the difference.

Final thought
The best coastal venues don’t just sit by the sea, they feel part of it. They embrace the rhythm of the tides, the light, and the sense of calm that only comes from being near the water.
Wherever you choose, let the sea be your something blue, and let the day flow as naturally as the waves themselves.
